Moonrise tonight

What time does the moon rise tonight?

Unlike the phase, moonrise depends on exactly where you are. Here is why, and how to get your time.

Why your moonrise is yours

Moonrise and moonset change with your longitude, your latitude, and the date. Two cities a few hundred kilometers apart can see the moon rise many minutes apart. Hills, buildings, and trees on your horizon delay the moment you actually see it.

Why the moon rises later each day

The moon moves eastward along its orbit, so each day Earth has to turn a little further to bring it back into view. On average the moon rises about 50 minutes later than the day before, though the gap ranges from under half an hour to more than an hour depending on the season and your latitude.

Moonrise by phase

A new moon rises around sunrise, a first quarter around midday, a full moon around sunset, and a last quarter around midnight. That is why a full moon is up all night and a crescent is only seen near dawn or dusk.

Your moonrise, to the minute.

aluni calculates moonrise and moonset for your exact location, accounts for the hills and ridges around you, and counts down to the next one. A reminder 55 minutes before moonrise is one tap away.
