Overview

Recalibration Laboratories ("we," "us," "our," or "Company") publishes aluni and related services (collectively, the "Services"). This Privacy Policy describes the categories of information we collect or that is collected on our behalf, how it is used, and the choices available to you. It applies to the aluni app, its widgets, and recalibrationlabs.com.

In short: aluni does not require an account, does not run ads, and performs its sky calculations on your device using a rounded, privacy-preserving location. We use a privacy-conscious analytics provider to understand aggregate feature usage (for example, which screens are viewed) so we can improve the product; this analytics activity does not identify you personally and is not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

We may update our data practices, service providers, and features over time as the product evolves. Where a change is material, we will update this policy and the "Last updated" date above.

Information We Collect

Information Stored Locally On Your Device

This information is stored on your device (and, where applicable, iCloud/local backups you control) using iOS's standard storage and encryption facilities. We do not operate servers that store this configuration data.

Information We Do Not Collect

See Analytics below for the limited, non-identifying usage information our analytics provider does receive.

Location Data

Location powers aluni's core feature: showing sunrise, sunset, moon position, and related sky events for where you are (or a location you choose).

As described under Analytics, our analytics provider may independently derive an approximate, city-level location from your device's IP address as part of standard analytics infrastructure. This is separate from, and coarser than, the on-device location described above, and is not used to identify you individually.

Analytics

We use PostHog, a product analytics service, to understand in aggregate how aluni is used - for example, which screens are viewed, which features are used, and basic technical context such as app version, build number, and distribution channel (development, TestFlight, or App Store). This helps us prioritize improvements and fix problems. Our PostHog instance runs on PostHog's EU Cloud infrastructure, so this analytics data is processed and stored on servers located in the European Union rather than the United States.

What this analytics activity does and does not do:
  • It does not use persistent per-user profiles - our configuration disables PostHog's person-profile feature, so events are not linked into an ongoing profile of you specifically.
  • It does not include your name, email, exact GPS coordinates, or other directly identifying information.
  • It is not used for cross-app or cross-website tracking, and it is not shared with advertising networks.
  • It is disclosed in aluni's Apple App Privacy ("nutrition label") details as analytics-purpose data that is not linked to your identity and not used for tracking.

A note on IP addresses: as standard for essentially all internet-connected services, our analytics events are transmitted over a network connection that includes your device's IP address, and our analytics provider may derive an approximate, city-level location from it. We treat IP address as personal information under laws that define it that way (including the GDPR and CCPA/CPRA), even though it does not by itself identify you individually - the safeguards described above (no person profiles, no advertising use, EU-based processing) apply to it the same as any other analytics data we receive.

We may add, change, or discontinue analytics or similar diagnostic providers over time (including crash- or performance-reporting tools) as the product evolves. Any such tools will be operated consistent with the principles in this section unless we update this policy to reflect a material change.

In-App Purchases and the App Store

aluni offers optional in-app purchases, which may include auto-renewing subscriptions and one-time purchases (for example, a voluntary "support" contribution), all processed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. Recalibration Laboratories does not receive, process, or store your payment card details, billing address, or Apple ID - that information is handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy.

We receive limited, non-financial receipt data from Apple confirming that a purchase or subscription occurred - for example, the product identifier and purchase or renewal date - which we use to unlock the corresponding feature on your device and to understand aggregate conversion and retention. This receipt data does not include your payment details, billing address, or Apple ID, and is disclosed in aluni's Apple App Privacy details as described below.

More broadly, this Privacy Policy covers Recalibration Laboratories' own practices - it does not apply to the App Store itself or to Apple's handling of your account, purchases, downloads, or device data as the platform through which you install and pay for aluni. Apple's collection and use of that information is governed by Apple's own privacy policy, and we aren't responsible for Apple's practices as a platform operator.

No Advertising

aluni does not display third-party advertisements and does not integrate advertising SDKs or ad-attribution frameworks. We do not use your information to serve you targeted ads, on aluni or elsewhere.

How We Share Information

We do not sell personal information. We may share limited information as follows:

Data Retention

Locally stored app data (widget configuration, notification settings, app preferences) remains on your device until you delete the app or reset the relevant settings; we do not separately retain copies of it. Analytics events processed by our analytics provider are retained by that provider according to its standard retention practices before being aggregated or deleted; because those events are not linked to an identified person, we are not able to retrieve or delete "your" analytics history individually, as no such individualized record is maintained.

iOS App Privacy Labels

Apple's App Privacy ("Nutrition Label") details for aluni, declared in App Store Connect and shown on its App Store product page, are kept consistent with this policy. In particular:

We update this policy and our App Store Connect declarations together whenever our data practices change, so the two stay in agreement. The App Store listing is the definitive, most current disclosure for App Store purposes.

Security

No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you discover a potential security vulnerability, please email security@recalibrationlabs.com and give us a reasonable opportunity to investigate and respond before any public disclosure.

If you're located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, the GDPR/UK GDPR requires us to identify the legal basis we rely on for each way we use information. Here is that mapping:

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or limit the use of information about you, and to receive a copy of it in a portable format. Because most aluni data lives locally on your device rather than in an identified record on our servers, many of these rights are most directly exercised on-device:

EEA/UK (GDPR) Rights

If the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to you, you additionally have the right to: access, rectify, or erase your personal information; restrict or object to our processing of it (see Legal Basis for Processing above); receive a portable copy of it; and lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@recalibrationlabs.com; we'll respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

California (CCPA/CPRA) Rights

Recalibration Laboratories is a small, self-funded studio, and based on our current scale (no accounts, minimal data collection, no data sales), we do not believe we currently meet the CCPA/CPRA's applicability thresholds. As a matter of practice, though, we honor requests to know, delete, or correct personal information, and requests to opt out of sale or sharing (we don't sell or share personal information, so this is a standing "no" by default). Submit any such request to privacy@recalibrationlabs.com; we will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. If our scale changes such that CCPA/CPRA's thresholds are met, we will add the additional request channels (such as a toll-free number or webform) that the law requires at that point.

Where applicable law grants additional or different rights not listed above, you may contact us at the address below and we will respond as required by the law that applies to you.

International Users and Data Transfers

Recalibration Laboratories is based in the United States. Our analytics provider, PostHog, processes analytics data on its EU Cloud infrastructure (servers located in the European Union), so if you're in the EEA or UK, that data generally stays within the EEA rather than being routed through the United States.

Because Recalibration Laboratories itself is a U.S. company, our own access to that EU-hosted data from the United States is treated as an international transfer under the GDPR/UK GDPR. Where that applies, we rely on the safeguards built into our analytics provider's standard data processing terms, including Standard Contractual Clauses, as the transfer mechanism. Other service providers (for example, infrastructure for recalibrationlabs.com) may process data in the United States or other jurisdictions; where required, we and those providers rely on appropriate safeguards for those transfers as well.

Children's Privacy

aluni is rated 4+ on the App Store, which means it's likely to be accessed by children as well as adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child in a manner inconsistent with applicable law, including the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the UK Information Commissioner's Office's Children's Code (Age Appropriate Design Code) and comparable EU standards, where applicable.

aluni's design already reflects the core principles those laws expect for services children may access: there's no account creation, no behavioral profiling, no advertising or ad-attribution SDKs, no social or messaging features directed at anyone (child or adult), and location is used on-device only and rounded for privacy. High privacy is the default, not an opt-in setting a child (or their parent) has to find and turn on.

If you believe a child has provided us with personal information in a manner inconsistent with this policy, please contact us at privacy@recalibrationlabs.com and we will take appropriate steps to address it. We revisit this section whenever we add a feature that could change this analysis - for example, accounts, social features, or advertising.

Changes to This Policy

We may revise this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the Services, or applicable law. We will post the revised policy here and update the "Last updated" date; for material changes, we may also provide additional notice (for example, an in-app notice). Your continued use of the Services after a revised policy is posted constitutes your acknowledgment of the revised policy, to the extent permitted by applicable law.
