A normal clock divides the day into 12 or 24 equal segments and says nothing about the sky. aluni starts from the horizon instead: a flat line splits the dial into sky above and ground below, the sun and moon hands cross it in real time, and the hours compress or stretch to match the true length of day and night where you are.

Because the dial follows the real length of day and night at your location. Long summer days stretch the daylight hours across more of the face and compress the night; in winter the reverse happens. An ordinary clock gives every hour the same size - aluni sizes them by the sky.

The moon takes about 24 hours and 50 minutes to return to the same position in the sky, compared to 24 hours for the sun. That extra 50 minutes is why moonrise shifts later each night, and aluni's clock is built to show that shift clearly.
